Sony Ericsson Xperia Play: Reviews, Specifications, and Comparisons

Sony Ericsson is always known for incorporating the popular Sony technologies in their mobile devices. The trend started on Sony Ericsson “Walkman-featured” music phones and then followed by “Cybershot-range” camera phones. Now, Xperia Play; the “Portable Gaming Phone” of Sony Ericsson; was finally introduced in the market (it arrived in Philippines last February, 2011).

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play possesses both the functionality of an Android-based smart phone and the capabilities of a portable gaming console. It is like having Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and Sony PSP Go combined as one. Take a look at Sony EricssonXperia Play:

To describe better the features of this gadget, I’m going to review and compare it separately as a smart phone and a portable gaming console.

Smart Phone Showdown: Sony Ericsson Xperia Play VS Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

First, let us take a look at Sony Ericsson Xperia Play as a smart phone by comparing it to Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc.

In terms of processors, the two are incomparable since they are both powered by same processor: 1 GHz Scorpion processor Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon. But, when it comes to RAM and Storage, one has advantage against the other. In terms of RAM, Xperia Arc is more powerful since it is packed with 512MB RAM; compared to Xperia Play which has only 380MB RAM. On the other hand; in terms of storage; Xperia Play possesses 400MB of internal memory, a little bit bigger compare to Xperia Arc’s 320MB internal memory. By the way, both are supported with microSD slot that can be expanded up to 32GB of external memory.

In terms of screen resolution, both featured capacitive LCD touchscreen with LED backlit; with screen resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. But, in terms of display quality and size, Xperia Arc’s 4.2 inch “Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine powered” display screen is better than Xperia Play’s 4 inch display screen.

In terms of camera, Xperia Arc has an 8MP camera with autofocus with LED flash; giving 3264 x 2448 pixels resolution. Meanwhile, Xperia Play has a 5MP autofocus main camera with LED flash; giving 2592 x 1944 pixels resolution; and a VGA secondary camera. With this, Xperia Arc is better compare to Xperia Play in terms of camera resolution.

When it comes to weight and dimension, Xperia Arc is lighter than Xperia Play; having a weight of 117 grams and 175 grams respectively. On the other hand, Xperia Play is a little bit smaller compare to Xperia Arc; having a dimension of 119mm x 62mm x 16mm and 125mm x 63mm x 8.7mm respectively.

Overall; as a smart phone; Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc is better compared to Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

Portable Gaming Console Showdown: Sony Ericsson Xperia Play VS Sony PSP Go

Now, let us take a look at Sony Ericsson Xperia Play as a portable gaming console by comparing it to Sony PSP Go.

As what I have mentioned before, Xperia Play is run by 1 GHz Scorpion processor Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon and 380MB RAM; making it really more powerful than PSP Go which run only by MIPS32 1-333MHz Processor and 64MB RAM. Though PSP Go has advantage on internal memory (having 16GB Flash Memory compare to Xperia Play’s 400MB internal memory), Xperia Play has advantage when it comes to external memory expansion (can be expanded up by 32GB microSD; twice bigger than PSP Go’s 16GB Memory Stick Micro Flash Memory).

When it comes to screen resolution, Xperia Play is bigger and much better compare to PSP Go. Unlike Xperia Play which has 4 inch LCD touchscreen with LED backlit and screen resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, PSP Go has only 3.8 inch TFT LCD with measly screen resolution of 480×272 pixels.

In terms of gaming controls, Xperia Play can also do whatever PSP Go can do – actually, Xperia Play can DO MORE what PSP Go can do. It shares an almost identical control set-up with the handheld devices: an eight-way D-pad, four face buttons and two shoulder buttons. Even though Xperia Play has no physical analogue nub (for precise movement in 3D environments) like what we can see in PSP Go, it adopts a novel twin-touchpad method that replicates the kind of twin-analogue stick functionality more commonly seen on your home console. Also, there are the traditional smart phone inputs that have taken the mobile gaming world by storm in recent years. Xperia Play can make use of both touchscreen and accelerometer inputs, while the PSP Go cannot.

In terms of games availability, Xperia Play has more games to download and play compared to PSP Go; since Xperia Play was run by Android OS, it can play Android games.

Overall; as a portable gaming console; Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is better compared to Sony PSP Go.

As a final conclusion, I can say that Xperia Play is intended to design as a portable gaming console with the power of a smart phone. Whatever your need is, I hope this Sony Ericsson Xperia Play reviews and comparisons would surely help you to conclude your decision properly whether you’ll purchase Sony Ericsson Xperia Play or not.
