Gadget Showdown: Apple iPad vs Samsung Galaxy Tab

Competitions among Tabet PCs are getting tough; that is why, I decided to make some comparison on each and every "hot" Tablet PCs that are popular in the market now. And for my first Tablet Showdown, let us compare Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Round 1: Processor

Based on the different reviews I read, both the iPad's A4 Processor and Galaxy Tab's Hummingbird Processor seem to have been developed by the same firm: Intrinsity. Both are based on the same ARM A8 Cortex 1GHz CPU. They just differ a little on Graphics Processing Unit or GPU (also called Visual Processing Unit or VPU; a specialized microprocessor that offloads and accelerates graphics rendering from the central micro-processor.) and RAM; Apple's A4 was consist of Cortex A8 at 1GHz, PowerVR SGX535 GPU, and 256MB RAM, while Samsung's Hummingbird was consist of Cortex A8 at 1GHz and PowerVR SGX540 GPU and 512MB RAM.

Round 2: Operating System

At present, the iPad is stuck on iOS 3.2. One issue with iOS 3.2 is its lack of ability to do multitasking, and also has no support for Flash 10.1. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Tab features Android 2.2 (a.k.a. "Froyo") and this means multitasking and Flash 10.1 support, so working is much easier. So till the iPad would get it’s new OS (iOS 4), Galaxy Tab has much better specs when it comes to OS and hardware.

Round 3: Storage

When its comes to internal memory alone, iPad has different models based on the storage size: from 16GB, 32GB and up to 64GB; while the Samsung Galaxy Tab models have only a 16GB and a 32GB of internal memory options. But, these can be expanded by using upto 32GB external memory. Overall, it still have a total of 64GB of memory; same as to iPad's 64GB model.

Round 4: Battery Life

The iPad's battery life certainly seems impressive - it offers a claimed 10 hours of video playback. The Galaxy Tab, on the other hand, can only muster up 7 hours of video playback. Still impressive, but doesn't quite match up to iPad.

Round 5: Size and Weight

When it comes to screen size and table weight, the iPad has a 9.7-inch touchscreen display capable of 1024x768 resolution and weight from 680g-730g. On the other hand, the Samsung tablet uses a 7-inch display capable of 1024x600 resolution and weight 380g.

Round 6: Connectivity

Apple iPad is available in two versions, one with 3G networking and one without. We’ll use the basic 16GB 3G + Wi-Fi version in this example. It means that Apple’s lust-object features data-only 3G/HSDPA connectivity, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR. But, the Galaxy Tab arguably has a better specification. It also packs 3G/HSDPA (up to 7.2Mbps). Also, the Samsung tablet can be used to make phone calls (via a Bluetooth headset) and to send/receive SMS/MMS data. The addition of 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 complete a great specification.

Round 7: Applications

In terms of available applications, both the Apple and Android app stores have more than enough variety to meet the needs of virtually any user. Granted, the Apple App Store has crossed the 250,000 apps mark, while the Android Market lags somewhere around 100,000 apps as on now.

After 7 rounds of comparing these tablets, it's all up to you to decide on which do you think is better. Cast your vote here, leave a comment, and tell us why you have that choice.
