aPad (iPad Clone) Buyers' Guide

aPad, iPed, iRobot, MID.... These are all the same thing. It is a iPad clone that is available to buy now, and at a significantly cheaper price than the iPad. The aPad (or iPed or ePad) is available to buy over in Shenzhen, China and also on a few Chinese websites. The device is quite different in terms of specs to Apple’s iPad, but the design is exactly the same style as you’d expect with the iPad.

Take a look at specs comparison between aPad and iPad:

aPad vs iPad

The biggest difference between the two is that the aPad runs Android 1.5 OS, rather than Apple’s iPhone OS. As you should know by now though, Android is no lightweight and the device packs some handy specs. Since it is running Android, you’ll also get a collection of Google apps, such as the Chrome browser, Google Maps and Google Talk.
Even though aPad was a clone one of iPad, we need to be sure if the aPad that we are going to purchase is a clone of the original and not a clone of clone (in short, fake aPad) I've made some research on how to distinguish original aPad from the fake one; and here is what I've found out.

Let us start first by taking at look at its specifications. An original aPad runs at 600 MHz RockChip 2808A processor; but the fake aPad runs only at 300 MHz VIA WM8505 processor. Imagine, 300MHz only! If you aready used a 1st Gen Ipod Touch (that runs a 620mhz processor), you can just imagine how slow these Fake aPad (a.k.a. FlyTouch) tablets are.

Here are the comparison of loading time of different websites from the two processors:

To know on which processors an aPad runs, check its relevant legal information (or the "about the device" section) by following this path:

MENU → Settings → About device→ Legal information

Now, once you are in the legal information section of the device, the first thing you need to check is the Kernel Version. This are the image of legal information section of an original aPad (running in a Rockchip processor):

On the other hand, the fake aPad has a word "dirty" at the end of its Kernel Version. This indicate that the said IPad runs at VIA Processor. Take a look at some of these images of legal information section of fake aPad:

A word "dirty" at the end of Kernel Version indicates that it runs at VIA 8505 processor.

Another thing: Those aPad devices that claim to be Android version 1.7 or 1.9 are fake! By checking Wikipedia's Android (operating system) Update History, OS version 1.7 and 1.9 doesn't exist.

A piece of advice from some expert: If you're getting an aPad, get AT LEAST the one that is Rockchip RK2808-based. But RK2808 can only use Android 1.6 and RK2818 can accomodate Android OS 2.0 and above. You can also have aPad that runs at Telechips TCC8902 or OMAP3 3530. (As of now, I didn't yet seen these two here in the Philippines, only the those that runs at Rockhips and VIA are available in Philippine market.)

Recommended aPad Models:
  • aPad iROBOT (Rockchip-based)
  • aPad X5A (Telechip-based)

I made this blog post to help other in buying an original aPad.
