Take a quick look at PS Vita specifications:
I want to emphasize on the first two notable specs of PS Vita: Its ARM Cortex A9 Quad Core CPU (Central Processing Unit) and its PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU (Graphic Processing Unit). ARM Cortex A9 Processor; the same kind of processor you'll find in many top-end tablets; have two variants: the power–optimized and the performance-optimized. The power-optimized Arm Cortex A9 processor has a clock speed up to 800MHz, which results in 0.5W of power consumption. On the other hand, the performance-optimized ARM Cortex A9 processor has a clock speed up to 2GHz, with 1.9W of power consumption.
Though Sony didn’t confirm which of the two variants will be use in PS Vita, but with its Quad-Core featured processor, it’s already a monster gaming console; not to mention its 200MHz PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU. The “4” in PowerVR SGX543MP4+ indicated that the GPU has 4 cores; same as PS Vita’s CPU. Imagine: Quad Core CPU + Quad Core GPU = Power Gaming Performance!
Asides from these, the next notable specs of PS Vita is its screen size and resolution. Compare to Sony PSP Go and Sony Ericsson Xperia Play which has 480×272 pixels 3.8 inch TFT LCD and 854×480 pixels 4-inch LCD touchscreen with LED backlit respectvely, PS Vita has a 960x544 pixels 5-inch OLED touchscreen. That is pretty impressive; however; OLED screen has one downside: it easily suck up battery juice. I wish Sony could come up with a solution for this matter before they release PS Vita in the market.
PS Vita has also touch-sensitive (laptop trackpad like) rear touchpad. Actually, I can’t see the logic on how this feature will be use in gaming, but Sony said that it enabling "touch, grab, trace, push and pull hand movements." Well, let’s see for ourselves on how it will really work.
PS Vita also have more than 80 titles in development, with titles mentioned during the presentation including Street Fighter X Tekken, Wipeout, and ModNation Racers, among others.
Other features of PS Vita like front and rear cameras, built in speakers and microphone, built-in GPS, 3G and W-Fi connection capabilities, SIXAXIS motion sensor technology, and dual analog sticks makes it more impressive.
The Sony PlayStation Vita will be available in time for the 2011 holiday season, and will sell for $249 (USD) / €249 (EUR)/ ¥24,980 (JPY), with the 3G/WiFi model selling for $299 (USD) / €299 (EUR) / ¥29,980 (JPY). No word yet on an AT&T subsidy, or costs for a 3G data plan. Both models can be pre-ordered now over at Amazon.
